Hey There Cyclists,
My name is Billy Savage and I'm setting up for the Chicago premiere
of my film, KLUNKERZ, at the Stan Mansion on Saturday, August 18th,
at 5:00pm. I'm very excited about the Chicago premiere, as it's a
city so rich in cycling culture. The film is a feature-length
documentary about the birth of the sport of mountain biking. What
started out as a way to cross-train for some hippie/athletes who were
immersed in Northern California's music scene, became a multi-
billion dollar industry, a form of recreation for the masses, and an
Olympic event. The film includes interviews with everyone involved in
the genesis of the sport, including Fisher, Breeze, Ritchey, Sinyard,
Kelly, Cunningham, Potts, Guy, Phelan, etc. etc. There's great
archival footage of the pioneers early exploits on the road, cyclo-
crossing, and downhilling in the early 1970s. Much of this footage
has never been seen before anywhere. The screening is in conjunction
with The Bicycle Film Festival (see below) and it should be quite a
gas (pun intended).
KLUNKERZ is my first film and it's been quite an experience. The film
was nominated for Best Documentary and Emerging Filmmaker awards at
the X-dance Action Sports Awards in Park City, UT. I even had the
privilege of presenting Gary Fisher with a 'Lifetime Achievement
Award' there. KLUNKERZ also won the Best Documentary jury prize at
The Durango Independent Film Festival in Durango, CO. The festival
tour has been fun, we haven't screened in Chicago yet, so I guess
this is the big Chicago premiere. If you, or anyone you know in the
Chicago area would like to come down, please have them go to
www.brownpapertickets.com/event/18472 or check the Bicycle Film
Festival website for tickets and 'press pass' information.
The Bicycle Film Festival is an truly an amazing event. The festival
is growing by leaps and bounds, and with gas prices approaching $4.00
a gallon, it's only going to get bigger. The festival's founder,
Brendt Barbour, is a fantastic guy with quite a story. He was a
messenger in NYC and was hit by a bus while riding and nearly killed.
During his recovery he came up with the idea of The Bicycle Film
Festival to increase awareness of bicycles on public roads. You can
find out more about him, and the festival, at his website
www.bicyclefilmfestival.com. You can also find out more about my film
at www.klunkerz.com and don't forget to sign the 'guest book'. Thanks
very much for your time and I hope to see you at the theater, or out
on two wheels.
Ride on,
Billy Savage
