Please thank Senator Durbin for defending funding for bicycle paths!

Last Tuesday, September 11, Senator Coburn (R-Okla.) introduced an amendment on the Senate floor "to prohibit the use of funds... for bicycle paths so that the funds can be used to improve bridge and road safety." While soundly defeated by a vote of 80-18, this misguided attempt at scapegoating bike paths for the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge on August 1 is unacceptable.

Following Sen. Coburn's speech, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) spoke up for bicycle paths and encouraged his colleagues to vote against the amendment. His comprehensive and well-articulated comments for bike path funding included arguments on health and obesity, environmental health, traffic congestion, safety, dependence on foreign oil and economic development.

Senator Durbin deserves to be thanked for his courageous speech in
defense of bicycle paths. Please take action!
