GNU Mailman: List Manager's Quick Reference Guide

This is a quick reference guide for Mailman mailing list managers. Please see the list administrator manual for more complete information. This quick reference includes:

Accessing your list administrative interface.

As list manager, you should have received a welcome message that included:

You will be prompted for your list administrator's password. Enter it and click the button to access your administration pages.

What to do if you have misplaced the administrative web address or the administrative password:

The web address to access the administrative function is:

http://mailman.outfitters.com/mailman/admin/[YourListName]

where [YourListName] is the name of your mailing list. If you're still unable to locate the screen or you don't have the password, contact Infobahn Outfitters .

Adding email addresses to your list

To add email addresses:

Note: Network etiquette generally frowns on adding unsuspecting persons to a list and then telling them that they can unsubscribe if they don't want to participate.  Sending unsolicited bulk email is against Infobahn Outfitters' acceptable use policies and may result in termination of your account.

Removing email addresses from your list

List members can unsubscribe themselves from the list as long as they have the password and their email address.  Mailman also gives the list manager the ability to remove an individual from the list.

Controlling who joins your list

Mailman allows you to prevent additions of email addresses to your list without explicit approval of you, the administrator. To activate this feature:

When Mailman receives future subscription requests, Mailman to send you an e-mail announcing that someone has tried to join your list. Go to the URL in the message and then use the on-screen form to accept or reject their request.

You may also want to verify settings for message archiving and other privacy settings for your list.  See the manual for details.

Changing maximum message size

The Mailman software limits the size of the message delivered through the mailing list.  This is to minimize negative impact of unnecessarily large messages. In some cases the default value may not be large enough to allow desirable messages and file attachments to pass through. To change the message size limit:
